Repeat Pattern Floral Design

I really enjoyed this task. We made use of a technique which allows you to create an infinitely repeatable pattern of what ever you design. For my pattern I drew inspiration from flowers which I observed in a botanical garden. Below is the process my design went through while implementing the repeat pattern technique and also a mood board of the flowers I photographed and drew inspiration from when observing the garden.

Mood Board

Process

I began by drawing a design which combined all of my favorite plants and their anatomy.

I decided to go over what I had drawn with a dark fine liner so that it would scan effectively as a digital copy and so that when I eventually repeat the pattern, the lines and shapes I connect fit easily without a lot of minor errors if my measurements are off slightly somewhere during the process.

After darkening and thickening the lines I applied the repeat pattern technique. This involved me cutting the above pattern (my original design) in half horizontally, and then swapping the two halves. The next step was to cut the design in half again but vertically this time and swap the paper on either side of the new vertically cut line. Another way to do this would be to cut the original design in half once horizontally and vertically, then to swap each corner shape with its diagonal opposite. After cutting and swapping the paper I filled in the white space which was now in the center of my design by drawing more vegetation and flower anatomy from the images I took. When trying to draw over the cuts the paper i made sure that lines had a defined shape to them and a consistent thickness.

Final

Finally I scanned my new design, cleaned up the messy bits, painted over uneven areas and filled in some shapes of the leaves using Photoshop. Lastly I repeated the pattern by duplicating it and placing it on either side of my original design.
