I decided to do a poster for the series Stranger Things using imagery from the posters of the upcoming 3rd season. Most of them depict a giant figure peering over the town in the series. The poster was made out of card board or paper which were stuck on top of one another. The idea was to break up the image I designed into layers which can be stuck at different levels to create a 3D effect. To achieve this the image I designed was broken up into about 7 layers which I colored specifically to enhance the depth being created. I then stuck each layer in the image on a specific amount of foam board progressing with height as i stuck down each one.

Original Vector Design

I decided to try and keep my shapes as vector and sided as possible allowing for no round or smooth edges because i needed to use my craft knife to cut out these shapes later. I broke the major shapes up into layers and then shaded the illustration in different tones of red in attempts to create depth and hoped this would strengthen the depth between separated layers in the final piece.

Process

I converted the major shapes in my illustration to lines and printed them individually with a border so that my scale remained accurate when resizing to print through word. I then stuck each layer onto the designated color of paper I had managed to find closest to my original design.

I then simply used my craft knife to cut along the lines of the layers I had printed and cut straight through the colored paper stuck underneath. I then removed the white printed paper from the colored paper gently and began placing my shapes on-top of each other. I stuck the colored paper on top of foam art board which created space between the layers and a 3D effect. I used the thickness of the board as one layer and began sticking the layers of my illustration in order, stacking the board on itself as the layers increased in height.

Eventually I ran into a problem as I found some of my paper absorbed the glue I was using way to much, which ruined the smooth shade of color for those layers. For that specific paper the glue did this every time so I had to switch to prestick and replace the tainted layers which set behind schedule.
