Nurdle Awareness

This project was inspired by a relatively new environmental hazard in attempts to raise awareness around the problem. This environmental hazard is called nurdles. Nurdles are small plastic pellets about the size of a lentil. Countless billion are used each year to make nearly all our plastic products but many end up washing up on our shores due to spills and mishandling by industry. Our planets oceans are now accumulating nurdles in worryingly large numbers. Unlike large pieces of plastic marine litter, nurdles are so small that they go largely unnoticed. However scientists are becoming increasingly concerned about their effect on our delicate marine ecosystem because nurdles do not go away like other plastic over time, they just fragment into smaller and smaller plastic particles. In order to bring this issue to light , we were tasked with finding a link between our environments and the issue and creating typography which embodied this concept while raising awareness around the problem.
As visual material I decided to go straight to the source and used plastic such as bottles and bags. I combined this with natural elements I could find in a natural vegetative area and eventually through process decided on sticks to represent my element of nature. The concept was drawn directly from my material and the issue at hand and became "Nature not Nurdles." This suggests one should find ways or alternatives through nature and frames nurdles as the opposing force to success. Not many people are actually even aware often nurdles existence so I thought by reading this message they would also become inquisitive and driven to research the topic, ultimately becoming educated.
