I decided to go with the task of creating a poster using various poster design techniques and methods to the format and layout of my poster in relation to its context.

The poster which I have created is based around a space theme. It is an invitation to the gardens shopping centre to attend a space themed week of shopping and entertainment where there are films, costumes, foods etc. (read the poster). I began designing my poster in illustrator and drew up the image of the earth being devoured by a giant creature with teeth in space. I coloured and saved these images and Imported them to photoshop. This is where I did the rest of my design work. I made layers of shading to create a 3D effect over my illustration. This was both for depth and to instil the poster design technique of creating contrast throughout my image so that I may direct attention to where I want my viewer to look. I also considered size and location placing the bulk of my text running in a shape to match the Star Wars films text and embodying the space theme. Another technique I made use off is using one big visual (being the big monster) to create a sharp focal point and further lead the viewer to be intrigued also driving the posters them and identity. Followed by this, I placed a thin strip of white amongst all the blackness to border just before the outline of my poster. This is a technique where on uses plenty of space cleverly to fleshy out a good poster. However, since I had so much content already and needed to stick to the dark space theme. I simply added this boarder to create further contrast and depth with my background and text. Finally, I created furthered focus using large typography. I place it against its own background for contrast and applied the same faded away effect as the monster and earth. The text says, “Space Week” and one might argue the faded affects makes it hard to red however the main theme of the poster is the dark depths of space and a week of it so I thought it fit the context. This was also a way to get the viewer to be more interested and lean into the poster leading them to read on.
