A task I was given was to create a compelling, innovative campaign that can build maximum awareness around a particular social event, issue, cause or brand as long as it’s about adding value to society. I worked with a team on this brief and we found a brand by the name of Muizenberg Beach Club located in Cape Town. They provide beach activities, mainly surfing to children who are affected by life in the townships. It is a strategy to steer these young people in a positive direction within society instead of becoming another criminal or gang member, or simply just to move them away from an unhealthy lifestyle.
We came up with a campaign which revolves around the idea of the barrel of a gun and the barrel of a wave and how symbolically one must choose in life their own path. Muizenberg Beach Club represents the positive choice in life depicted by the barrel of the wave in the symbolic sense and the literal sense. I was mostly responsible for the design and creation of the new logo for MBC. I played with simple illustration of a waves coming out behind surf boards. I found this was over used in a lot of surf themed brands so I ideated further. I then focused more on the barrel of a wave and how that imagery is similar to that of a gun barrel. I did this until I found what I believed was a good balance between the look of the both barrels and then moved forward by infusing elements which pointed out Muizenberg Beach Club.
